Allison Joy Langer was originally born in Columbus, Ohio. Her family moved to the San Fernando Valley at age 5, just outside Los Angeles, where she spent high school in Granada Hills. She first began to use her initials to join a cricket squad of all-boys and the nickname stuck. She was introduced to her acting mentor Ernie Lively. After appearances on television programs, including Drexell's Class (1991) (who portrayed a then-unknown Brittany Murphy), Coach (1989), and The Wonder Years (1988), she achieved worldwide fame as Rayanne Graff in the sitcom My So-Called Life (1994).
