Adrienne Levine (June 24, 1966–November 1, 2006) was an American actress, film director and screenwriter, better known by the stage name Adrienne Shelly (sometimes credited as Adrienne Shelley. She became known for roles in independent films like The Unbelievable Truth from 1989 and the Trust from 1990. She wrote, co-starred in, and directed the film Waitress, posthumously released in 2007. Shelly was found dead on 1 November 2006, hanging in her Greenwich Village work-studio apartment's bathroom. The scene's initial investigation found no suspicious circumstances, and apparently the police assumed it was a suicide. Her husband insisted she never took her own life .
