Alan Arkin is an American actor who has received the Academy Award, and is also an accomplished director, writer, author, musician, and composer. He was born on 26 March 1934 in Brooklyn, New York, to Alan Wolf Arkin. His ancestors were Jewish, Russian and German emigrants. The Arkins relocated from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, California, in 1946. He attended Franklin High School from 1951 to 1953 in Los Angeles, then Los Angeles City College, and Bennington College from 1953 to 1954 in Vermont. He sang in a folk-band community, and was interested in a class in drama. He dropped out of college to join The Tarriers, a folk music group where Arkin was the lead singer and played guitar.Arkin made his Broadway debut in 1961 in musical "From the Second Place," for which he wrote songs and sketches, and then appeared as David Kolowitz in the Broadway comedy "Join Laughing" (1963), for which he received a Tony Award. He appeared in a Broadway musical "From Second City production, then returned to Broadway in" Luv "(1964) as Harry Berlin.
