Alan Walbridge Ladd (3 September 1913 – 29 January 1964) was an American actor and author in films and television. In the 1940s and early 1950s, Ladd found success in film, particularly in Westerners like Shane (1953), and in films noir. In noirish films such as This Weapon for Hire (1942), The Glass KeyHis other notable credits include his first Western and colour picture, Two Years Before the Mast (1946), Whispering Smith (1948), and The Great Gatsby (1949). His success decreased in the late 1950s but he continued to star in famous movies until his accidental death due to a fatal combination of beer, a barbiturate, and two tranquilizers. (1942) and The Blue Dahlia (1946), he was frequently partnered with Veronica Lake.
