Lowe, rotund and technically indefatigable, correctly known as an outstanding actor of sitcom character; fondly recalled as the irascible "Captain Mainwaring" in Dad's Army's Home Guard television show (1968-1977), and as "Leonard Swindley" in Coronation Street (1960). Lowe, the only child of a Derbyshire railway worker, acquired useful experience by staging shows in the Middle East during World War Two for a British army military entertainment organization, before beginning his professional acting career at the age of 30 in 1945, when he joined the "Manchester Repertory Theater Company."
