Barry Robert Pepper was born in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada on 4 April 1970. He has two older brothers named Doug Pepper and Alex. The Peppers hadn't sticked too long around Campbell River. For years, they had built a ship at their backyard. The ship was completed when Barry was 5 years old, and the family set sail.Named "The Moonlighter," the ship was a 50-foot craft that would be home to them for the next five years. They navigated through the islands of the South Pacific, using only a sextant and the stars as guides. When visiting exotic places such as Fiji and Tahiti, Barry was educated by correspondence courses, and sometimes studied in public schools.
