In a string of both dramatic and comic appearances, Multi Grammy Award-winning singer / comedian / author Bette Midler has also proven to be a very talented actress. Midler was born on 1 December 1945 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is daughter of seamstress Ruth (Schindel) and painter Fred Midler. Her parents, originally from New Jersey, all hailed from Jewish families. Midler studied theater at Hawaii University and began her musical career with Barry Manilow's piano accompaniment in gay bathhouses. Her first album was "The Virgin Miss M" released in November 1972, followed by the self-titled "Bette Midler" released in November 1973, both of which jumped off the music charts, and from there Bette's fame quickly grew.
