Brit Heyworth Marling was born to Heidi (Johnson) and John Marling in Chicago, Illinois, who both work in the real estate business. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from Georgetown University, and was offered a job with Goldman Sachs, which she turned down in favor of a career as artist.She moved to Los Angeles to perform, and after spending a couple of years studying the film industry and being given roles as "the pretty blonde in horror movies," she taught herself to script, arguing that writing them, herself, was the best way to get decent parts.
