Broderick Crawford is best known for two roles: his Oscar-winning performance as Willie Stark in All the King's Men (1949), and as Chief Dan Mathews on Highway Patrol (1955), a syndicated TV drama. He was also unforgettable in Born yesterday (1950), as the boisterous husband of Judy Holliday. He was born on 9 December 1911 to Lester Crawford and Helen Broderick, two vaudeville artists, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eventually his mother had a brief film career working in comedies filmed in Hollywood.
