Bryce Johnson was born on 18 April 1977 and raised with his mother and two brothers in Sioux City, Iowa. During his high school years his family lived in Denver, Colorado for a brief period, which is when his vision of being an actor came to life. Unlike his character on Famous (1999), Johnson was the coach of the varsity soccer team and the co-captain of golf team at hus.school. Soon after graduation from high school in 1995, Bryce put his things into his car's back and headed to Los Angeles, California. There, he studied at the American Dramatic Arts Academy. He soon secured a series supporting role in The WB pilot Saving Graces (1999) but was cast in Famous (1999) after that show failed to make the schedule.
