Charles Martin Smith is an actor, novelist, and producer of American films. Born in Van Nuys, California, Smith was spotted, typically a rare occurrence, by a talent agent while performing in a school play. He landed the role of Terry "Toad" Fields in George Lucas ' 1973 movie, American Graffiti (1973), after a few years of work in film. The sequel, More American Graffiti (1979), did not have the original's success, but received recognition in The Buddy Holly Story (1978), Never Cry Wolf (1983) and Starman (1984).
