Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American personality in music, acting, and television. Commonly referred to by the media as Pop's Queen, she has been portrayed as embodying female sovereignty in an industry dominated by men. Cher is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice and for having worked in several film fields, as well as having followed a range of styles and performances during her six-decade career. In 1965, Cher achieved fame as one-half of the folk music husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher after reaching number one on the American and British charts with their hit "I Got You Babe" By the end of 1967 they had sold 40 million albums worldwide and had become rock's "it" team, according to Time magazine.
