Chris Joseph Columbus (born 10 September 1958) is an American film director, writer, and author better known for his family and nostalgic films. Columbus was born in Spangler, Pennsylvania, and studied film at Tisch College of the Arts. He made his directorial debut with a teen comedy, Adventures in Babysitting (1987), having written screenplays for Gremlins (1984) and The Goonies (1985). For the widely popular Holiday adventure dramas, Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Columbus gained recognition shortly afterward.
