Carlton Douglas Ridenhour (born 1 August 1960), professionally known as Chuck D, is an American artist, poet, and producer. As the leader of the rap group Public Enemy, which he co-founded with Flavor Flav in 1985,Chuck D helped develop hip hop music that was politically and socially conscious in the mid-1980s. Ridenhour was originally raised in Queens, New York. After the 1977 New York City blackout he started composing rhymes. Having graduated from Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School, he went to study graphic design at Adelphi University on Long Island, where he met William Drayton (Flavor Flav).
