Corey Johnson (born 28 April 1982) is a US politician. A Democratic Party leader, he has served as New York City Council Speaker since 2018.In 2013, Johnson was first elected to the New York City Council as a 3rd District candidate. The district covers Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, the West Village, as well as Manhattan's Upper West Side and portions of Flatiron, SoHo. In 2019, he acted briefly as acting public advocate for New York City. Johnson was also named as a possible contender before he was elected to the speakership.Christine Quinn stood for New York City mayor in 2013 when her term in the City Council expired. Johnson, then President of Community Board 4, stood to replace Quinn in Council District 3, and was defeated with 86 percent of the vote in November 2013.
