Cyd Charisse was born on 8 March 1921 in Amarillo, Texas, to Tula Ellice Finklea. She was raised as a dancer and spent her early childhood taking ballet lessons, entering Ballet Russe at age 13. She married their former dance coach Nico Charisse in 1939. She starred in her first film, Something to Shout About (1943), which she billed as Lily Norwood in 1943. She played a Russian dancer in Mission to Moscow (1943) the same year, under the direction of Michael Curtiz. In 1945 she was employed to perform in Ziegfeld Follies with Fred Astaire (1945), and that uncredited performance earned her a seven-year contract with MGM.
