Michael Eugene Archer (born 11 February 1974) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer, best known by his stage name D'Angelo (pronounced di-Angelo). Along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell and collaborator Angie Stone, D'Angelo is affiliated with the neo soul movement. The son of a Pentecostal priest, D'Angelo, raised in Richmond, Virginia, taught himself piano as a boy. When eighteen, he won three weeks in a row in an independent talent contest when Harlem's Apollo Theater. His first major hit came in 1994 as co-writer and co-producer of the single "U Should Learn," following a short collaboration with hip-hop group I.D.U.
