Chicago-born Darlene Tompkins was born from a "show-biz family" with relatives who were involved in the Vaudeville and in plays. A victory for the beauty competition opens some doors for Tompkins in Hollywood, who began playing in commercials, starred with TV shows and other features, such as Elvis Presley's Blue Hawaiian (1961), Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) at age 18.
