Diane Keaton was born in Los Angeles, California, to the aspiring photographer Dorothy Deanne (Keaton) and John Newton Ignatius "Jack" Wall, a structural engineer and real estate broker. She studied drama at Santa Ana College, before dropping out on behalf of the New York Neighborhood Playhouse.She got her first major stage part in the Broadway rock musical "Beard" after performing in summer stock for several months She attracted attention as an understudy to the lead by not taking all of her clothing.
