He was born on 9 September 1954 in Oxnard, California. He grew up in Lompoc, California with several older and younger siblings. He has been at the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts in Santa Maria, and the University of Washington Professional Actor Training Program in Seattle.He played with his equity card in a drag act called Feeling Mutual. In the late 1980s, advertisements were released at Vidal Sassoon. In a Saturday Night Live parody he parodied his unusual way of pronouncing "salon" in these advertisements.
