Douglas Noel Adams was an English novelist, screenwriter, essayist, humorist, satirist and dramatist (11 March 1952 – 11 May 2001). Adams was the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which began as a BBC radio comedy in 1978 before transforming into a "trilogy" of five novels that sold over 15 million copies in his lifetime and spawned a TV show, several stage plays, comics, a computer game, and a feature film in 2005. Adams also wrote Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Mind (1988) and co-wrote The Sense of Liff (1983), The Darker Sense of Liff (1990), Last Chance to See (1990), and three stories for the TV series Doctor Who; he also worked as script editor for the seventeenth season of the show in 1979.
