There are a few character actors who rose to the level of stardom from the 1930s, ' 40s or ' 50s. Just a special man or woman achieved the standard of renown and appreciation, and had enough appeal from the public to be the first name in the billing of a cast, a name which got marquee posting. Charles Coburn springs to mind, although not many many do. One who did this, however, was Edmund Gwenn.Gwenn was born on 26 September 1877 to Edmund Kellaway in Wandsworth, London. He was the family's oldest child, which then meant that he was the only one who really cared. His father was a British civil servant, and Edmund was groomed to assume a position of influence in the Empire.
