Sir Edmund Percival Hillary KG ONZ KBE (July 20, 1919-January 11, 2008) was a mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist from New Zealand. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first confirmed climbers to reach Mount Everest summit. They were part of John Hunt's ninth British expedition towards Everest..While in secondary school Hillary became interested in mountaineering. In 1939 he made his first major climb to the top of Mount Ollivier. During World War II, he served as a navigator in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and was wounded in an accident.
