John Eric Bartholomew, OBE (May 14, 1926–May 28, 1984), known as Eric Morecambe, was an English comedian who created the award-winning double act Morecambe and Wise together with Ernie Wise. From 1941 the relationship continued until the death of Morecambe in 1984. Morecambe had adopted his stage name from his home town, Morecambe's seaside resort in Lancashire.He was the co-star of the television series The Morecambe & Wise Show which received UK viewing figures of over 27 million people for one Christmas episode. One of the most influential comedians in British popular culture, he was voted one of the 100 Greatest Britons in a BBC poll in 2002.
