María Eva Duarte (May 7, 1919–July 26, 1952), better known as María Eva Duarte de Perón, Eva Perón and Evita, was the wife of Argentina's President Juan Perón (1895–1974) and Argentina's First Lady from 1946 to 1952. She was born into poverty as the youngest of five children in the rural village of Los Toldos, in the Pampas. She moved to Buenos, the nation's capital, at 15 in 1934. On 22 January 1944, during a charity event at Luna Park Stadium, she met Colonel Juan Perón in order to benefit the victims of an earthquake in San Juan, Argentina. The next year the two married.
