Raised in Toronto, Ontario, she began acting as a teenager, at which time she got Jive Records 'request for a recording deal, and declined.Shortly afterwards, Dobson signed with Island / Def Jam and released her self-titled debut album (2003), which saw the success of the singles "Bye Bye Lover" and "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)" on the Canadian Hot 100 chart and earned two Juno Award nominations for that.
