Freida Selena Pinto was born to Sylvia, a school principal in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India, and Frederick Pinto, a senior branch manager at the bank. She is from a family in Mangalore.Pinto traversed the modeling circuit in Mumbai (represented by Elite Model Management India) for two years before receiving her big break when director Danny Boyle picked her out for his project Slumdog Millionaire (2008) in the audition process to play the female lead, Latika. Boyle compared her to his discovery of Kelly Macdonald for Trainspotting in a promo-interview.
