Gemma Chan (born 29 November 1982) is an actress and former fashion designer in British film, television, and theatre. In season four of the Showtime and ITV2 drama, she plays Charlotte Secret Diary of a Call Girl; Ruth in Channel 4's Fresh Meat; Mia Bennett in the BBC's Doctor Who "The Depths of Mars" and Soo Lin in Sherlock.She has also starred in the action-thriller Jack Ryan of Exam and Paramount Pictures: Shadow Hire. She stars in Humans, a science-fiction drama by AMC / Channel 4 that premiered in June 2015. Chan was born in London, England, at Guy's Hospital. Her father was an architect and grew up in Hong Kong. Her mum, a pharmacist at Guy's Hospital, emigrated with her parents (Chan's maternal grandparents) and younger sister from pre-Cultural Revolution Communist China from Hong Kong, and grew up in Greenock, Scotland.
