He was known for his lively and physical style of acting, his good looks and the caring characters he played on television.Best remembered today for his roles in movies such as On the Street (1949), An American in Paris (1951), Anchors Aweigh (1945) — for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor — and Singin ' in the Rain (1952), he acted in music films before they dropped out of fashion in the late 1950s. He acted in, choreographed or co-directed some of the best-loved musicals of the 1940s and 1950s, made his debut with Judy Garland in For Me and My Gal (1942), followed by Du Barry Was a Lady (1943), Thousands Cheer (1943), The Pirate (1948), and It's Still Fair Weather (1955), and others.
