Raised and trained at the Old Vic Theater School in Leeds, England, 1947-1949. First stage performance in 1949 in "Tough at the Gates," followed by seasons at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon; Glasgow Citizen's and Birmingham Repertory Theatre. First at the west end of London in "The Good Moment" (1952) and then in "Worzel Gummidge," "A Month of Sundays," "Maria" and "Unfinished Business." Overseas: Caesar performed in "Caesar and Cleopatra" (Paris, 1956); Ravinia Shakespeare Festival (Chicago, 1964); Pickering in "My Lovely Lady" (Houston, 1991).
