George Montgomery was boxing champion at Montana University where he received a master's in architecture and interior design. A year after he dropped out and decided to take boxing more seriously. He moved to California where former World Heavyweight Champion James J. Jeffries trained him.Up until his co-starring role in Roxie Hart (1942), opposite Ginger Rogers, he did not secure a part in anything even remotely like a prestige picture. Then, he played the perfunctory love interest for Ann Rutherford in Orchestra Wives (1942), though both eventually ended up playing Glenn Miller and His Orchestra's second trombone.
