George Ames Plimpton (March 18, 1927-September 25, 2003) was an American journalist, writer, literary editor, actor and sometimes amateur athlete. He is well recognised for his writing on sports and for helping to found The Paris Review, as well as his patrician demeanor and accent. He was also known for "participatory media," which involved engaging in competitive sports competitions, behaving in a Western manner, doing a comedic show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and practicing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and then capturing the experience from an amateur viewpoint.
