Haing Somnang Ngor (1940 – 25 February 1996) was a Cambodian American gynecologist, obstetrician, actor and author.His early work in The Killing Fields (1984), in which he played Cambodian journalist and refugee Dith Pran, was best remembered for winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1985.Ngor is the only Asian descent actor to receive the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. He spent three years in prison camps in Cambodia, using his medical knowledge to keep him alive by eating insects, termites, and scorpions; he finally crawled to safety in a Red Cross refugee camp between Khmer Rouge and Vietnamese lines.
