With both Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg and at the HB Studio, Keitel learned, ultimately landing roles in several off-Broadway plays. Around that time, Keitel auditioned for director Martin Scorsese and took on a supporting role as "J.R." in the first feature film by Scorsese, Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967).Scorsese and Keitel have since collaborated on many campaigns together. Keitel had the leading role in Mean Streets (1973) by Scorsese, which also proved to be the breakthrough film by Robert De Niro. Keitel re-teamed Scorsese for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), in which he played a villainous supporting role, and starred in Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976) with Robert De Niro once more.
