Davis, second of three daughters, was born in Englewood, New Jersey, Joan's aunt, a librarian (at one time for Elisabeth Morrow School's elementary section), and an architect, William Davis. Davis has described her mother as a "pure storyteller" who would take Davis and her siblings every Sunday after Church to museums or to "something cultural." Davis had been born in Tenafly, New Jersey and graduated from Tenafly High School in 1982. She was Mira Sorvino's childhood partner, with whom she read and performed in plays at backyard.
