Jackie Coogan was born into a Vaudevillian family, where his father was a dancer and his mother was a child star. On stage by four, at the age of five, Jackie was touring in Los Angeles, California with his father.Charles Chaplin, who then and there conceived a movie in which he and Jackie would be starring, spotted him while playing on the stage. Chaplin then gave him a minor role in A Day's Pleasure (1919) to test Jackie, which showed he had a film presence. The film Chaplin was making on that day was The Kid (1921), where Jackie would be adopted by the Tramp and then lose. The film was quite good
