Ziegfeld rejected her for his "Follies" but in several movies she got work as an extra. Irving Thalberg had seen her early efforts in acting and gave her a five-year contract when he joined Louis B. Mayer in 1923. Upon their marriage, he figured she would retire, but she wanted bigger parts. She insisted on firing agent Viktor Tourjansky in 1927, because he was confused about her cross-eyed stare.
