James Gandolfini was born to Santa (Penna), a high school lunchlady in Westwood, New Jersey, and James Joseph Gandolfini, Sr., a bricklayer and janitor at the head school. The parents had also been of Italian descent. Gandolfini continued working in New York City.His Broadway debut had been with Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin in the 1992 adaptation of "A Streetcar Named Desire." James ' breakout role was his portrayal of Virgil the hitman in Tony Scott's True Romance (1993), but the role which earned him worldwide fame and accolades was as complicated Mafia boss Tony Soprano in HBO's smash hit series The Sopranos (1999).
