James Christopher Read was born into a well-groomed family on July 31, 1953, in Buffalo, New York. Up until his college years, he had never dreamed of acting. He started studying law at the University of Oregon but he discovered his love for theater near his graduation. He left college, joining a theatrical group in Denver.
