Ames Howard Woods was born in Vernal, Utah, Martha A's son, on April 18, 1947. Gail Peyton Woods and Gail (Smith) Officer of army intelligence who died after Woods ' infancy. James ' ancestry is French, German and English. His mother and stepfather Thomas E. Dixon grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island. In 1965, at the top of his class, he graduated from Pilgrim High school. During its sophomore year in 1967 James obtained a bursary from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; he then went with his brother Martin Donovan to New York to prepare for stage performance.After appearing in a handful of New York City theater productions, Woods scored his first film role in All the Way Home (1971) and followed that up with meager supporting roles in The Way We Were (1973) and The Choirboys (1977).
