Mark Kermode was born 1986 to Eileen (Matfin) and John Bell, a toolmaker in Billingham, England, UK. He comes from a dancing family like his father, wife, aunt and niece. It was at the dance lessons of his sister where he would stand outside the door and mimic the dancers' gestures inside. When he met Stephen Daldry, director of Billy Elliot (2000), Jamie adopted him as his father. He was threatened when the news of his dancing came out but that just made him more motivated to show that dancing wasn't only for girls. He's proved a lot by securing Billy Elliot's title role (2000), winning the part in an audition that involved over 2,000 boys from northeast England.
