Martha Janet Lafferty was born in the year 1921 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Born there in the public school system, during her childhood and teens she sang in the church choir. The drive and talent were clear enough by the time she graduated for her to consider singing as a career. A young scout from Columbia Pictures noticed her in the pretty-as-a-picture songstress behind the microphone, and saw good promise. Kemp's death in a traffic crash in December 1940 and the subsequent dissolution of the band signaled a lifetime pattern of events. She signed up for up to $100 a week with Columbia, and moved to Los Angeles when her husband sought work as a guitarist at the theater.
