Jean Smart, originally from Seattle, was born on September 13, 1951. Following high school, she attended Washington University and earned her BA in fine arts. Her first professional season was with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival where she played amongst others in "Much Ado About Nothing." During this time, she developed a strong regional theater resume with companies such as the Hartford Stage Company, the Pittsburgh Public Theater, the Seattle Repertory Theater, the Alaska Repertory Theater and the Alliance Theater. Her first major break was in the influential, critically acclaimed lesbian drama "Last Summer at Bluefish Cove," which earned her an Off-Broadway Drama Desk nomination.
