Jill Wendy Dando (9 November 1961 – 26 April 1999) was a British journalist, newsreader and tv presenter. She spent much of her time at the BBC, and in 1997 became the Personality of the Year for the network. Her tv experience at the time of her death included co-presentation with Nick Ross on the BBC One show Crimewatch. Dando was shot dead outside her house, in Fulham, London, on the morning of April 26, 1999. It sparked the Metropolitan Police's first murder inquiry, and the country's biggest criminal investigation since the Yorkshire Ripper search. After an appeal and retrial, a local man, Barry George, was arrested and jailed for the murder but eventually acquitted.
