Jeffrey Jacob Abrams was born in New York City, and raised in Los Angeles, the son of parents of television artists. Abrams wanted to go to dental school but decided to go to Sarah Lawrence College and study film. At 15, he composed the music for Nightbeast Don Dohler (1982). He and Jill Mazursky teamed up in his senior year to compose a feature script, which became Taking Care of Business (1990). He went on to write On Henry (1991) and Forever Young (1992) and make. He also co-wrote, with Mazursky, Gone Fishin' (1997). He worked with digital graphics along with other Sarah Lawrence students, and was hired to produce Shrek's pre-production graphics (2001).
