Blond, blue-eyed Joan Caulfield was born on 1 June 1922 in Orange, New Jersey, one of three daughters of Manhattan-based aircraft superintendent Henry R. Caulfield. She obtained a private scholarship and was educated at University of Columbia in late 1940.Her early attempts at acting with the Morningside Players acting troupe did not seem to suggest any exceptional skills in that direction, so she diverted her attention toward a career pattern. Joan's excellent looks and demure attitude quickly secured her top modeling shoots with the Harry Conover Agency including the Life magazine cover of May 11, 1942.
