How tall was Joanne Dru?
Joanne Dru, daughter of a druggist from West Virginia, came to New York in 1940. She worked as a model in New York and was cast by Al Jolson as one of the showgirls in his Broadway play "Hold Onto Your Hats." She married popular singer Dick Haymes when the show closed in 1941 and went with him to Hollywood. Joanne made her film debut in Abie's Irish Rose (1946), spotted by a young scout while working in theater, and that picture nearly ended her career. Two years later, with her appearance in the classic Howard Hawks western Red River (1948), she "redimited" herself.
