John Howard Carpenter (born 16 January 1948) is an American actor, musician and screenwriter. While Carpenter has experimented in various genres of filmmaking, he is most widely associated in 1970s and 1980s horror, action, and science fiction films.The bulk of Carpenter's career films were originally commercial and critical failures, with the notable exceptions being Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Escape from New York (1981) and Starman (1984). Many of Carpenter's films from the 1970s and 1980s have, however, come to be considered as cult icons, and he has been remembered as an influential filmmaker.
