John Gielgud was born in London, England and educated at the Acting School of Lady Benson, and RADA, London. Best known in the theater for his Shakespearean roles, he first played Hamlet when he was 26 years old. He worked with colleague and fellow actor Laurence Olivier and other National Theater colleagues under the tutelage of Lilian Bayliss at the "Old Vic," London. Sir John Gielgud was a very respected and prolific talent who is known as one of his generation's finest performers. A graduate of London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, he performed his first Hamlet in 1930 and soon identified himself as one of his time's most eminent Shakespearean interpreters, as well as a revered conductor.
