John Le Mesurier, son of a attorney, British character actress, attended primary school in Dorset, England before embarking on a legal career. His real calling became acting, however, and at age 20, with the encouragement of his father, he started his acting career by studying drama at the Fay Compton School of Acting, where Alec Guinness was one of his classmates.He appeared in repertory after acting school until World War II, when he served in the Northwest Indian Frontier as a lieutenant. He returned to the stage after the war and made his movie debut in Death in The Hand (1948).
